"BACK TO BLACK"Featuring Dunfermline ArtistDOROTHY BLACK Supporting Artists : Dorothy Black Following the successful Easter Exhibition and continuing the gallery's varied programme throughout the year, Art Room 59' summer showcase is of a figurative theme. "Back to Black" features the work of Dunfermline based artist Dorothy Black who lists this as her second major show since re launching her exhibiting career in 2005. After graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 1985 with a BA Honours Degree and then Post Graduate Diploma in 86, Dorothy participated in many group and solo exhibitions within the UK and America, and gained a wide reputation for her work. "Dorothy Black... a significant talent... a fragment of face sometimes adds literal emphasis, the sensuous lines of the female neck are seldom realised with such authority...she is a one off worth watching." Dorothy's creative path led her into a career in education and she has been an inspirational teacher over the whole spectrum from primary through secondary, becoming head of department at Queen Anne, and latterly tutoring life drawing and painting at FE level. Motivated by her teaching experiences and inspired by the creative environment in which she worked, Dorothy returned to painting, re launching her career as a working, exhibiting artist. This new body of work is all executed on canvas which allows further experimentation with scale and media. Dorothy never tires of exploring the possibilities which the human figure offers and continues to develop her style, marrying solid structural drawing with pure enjoyment of media, in particular painterly qualities. Colour, pattern and texture are also a feature. "Dorothy Black continues to dazzle and amaze with her uncompromising drawings of the broad back of womanhood, finding depth of inspiration as it twists and turns under its social role and Klimt-like decoration. Humour, perception and aesthetic consideration are always carefully balanced in all her work."
